    Frequently asked questions

Clear terms, fixed-price listings, and no mystery math.

    What does consignment cost?

For guitars, there's nothing to pay up front.

    • 30% commission on the final sale price (before shipping and tax), only when your item sells.
    • $125 guitar setup, required for every guitar, deducted from your proceeds at sale.
    • $20 intake fee for pedals, pickups, parts, and other small gear, charged only if we accept your item.
    • $85 intake fee for amps, speaker cabinets, keyboards, and other large gear, charged only if we accept your item.
    • $250 professional demo video, optional, deducted from your proceeds at sale.

Example: your guitar sells for $1,000. The commission is $300 and the setup is $125, so you receive $575.

Small items usually need to sell for $250 or more to be worth consigning. Not sure what yours is worth? Ask us anyway. For anything unusual, tell us what you have and we'll confirm the fee and how to get it to us.

What does the 30% commission cover?

It covers pricing research, photography, listing creation, marketplace fees, marketing, buyer communication, basic cleaning, packing, and sales coordination. The guitar setup, intake fees, the optional demo video, any repairs you approve, and applicable shipping costs are separate and itemized.

    What about setup and repairs?

Every guitar gets a professional setup before it's listed, so it plays its best in a buyer's hands. The setup is $125, deducted from your proceeds when it sells.

We won't do more than $125 of work without your approval. If your guitar needs more than the setup, we tell you what it needs and what it costs, and we wait for your OK before doing the work.

Do I need to be local?

Not for guitars and small gear like pedals: ship them to us from any US address, or book a drop-off at our Benicia, California shop. Amps, speaker cabinets, and other large gear are drop-off only. Either way, we market your gear to buyers worldwide.

How do I ship my gear to you?

We review every inquiry before anything ships, so you'll know up front if your item isn't a good fit. Once we agree to take it, we send you our shipping address. Shipping in is for guitars and small gear from US addresses; amps, speaker cabinets, and other large gear are drop-off only.

    • You ship it at your cost, pack it, and insure it for the trip.
    • Once it arrives undamaged, it's our responsibility. We inspect it when it arrives.
    • If we decline it after inspection, there's no intake fee. You cover return shipping: send us a prepaid label or pay us for the postage.
    • If it comes back to you (unsold, or because you ended early), you pay return shipping, and any fees owed are settled before it ships.
    How does pricing work?

We research the market and agree with you on the initial list price and the minimum gross sale price before your item goes live. We don't auction consignment items, and we turn off "make an offer" on marketplaces by default. We won't lower the price without your approval.

How long is the consignment term, and can I end it early?

The initial term is 90 days, starting when your first approved listing goes live. After that, either of us can end the consignment under the signed agreement.

Ending before day 90 costs 5% of the initial list price, which covers administration, marketing, and business costs. Fees for work already done (the setup, and the video if you chose it) still apply, and you pay return shipping. Example: ending early on a guitar listed at $2,000 costs $100, plus the $125 setup and return shipping.

What if my item doesn't sell?

After the initial term, you can take it back. Fees for work already done (the $125 setup, and the $250 video if you chose it) are settled before it leaves us. Pick it up in Benicia by appointment, or for guitars and small gear, we can ship it back at your cost. Amps and other large gear are picked up in Benicia.

If you'd rather keep it listed, there's no storage fee while your agreement is active.

    Will I receive updates?

Yes. We send updates at major milestones—including when your item is listed, sold, settled, and paid—and provide monthly item-level progress and performance updates while it remains active.

When and how am I paid?

We pay by Zelle within 10 business days after the applicable buyer return window closes and the transaction is fully settled. The standard return window is normally 30 days after confirmed delivery unless a marketplace requires longer. We verify your Zelle details before sending payment.

    Are there storage fees?

No. GuitarFinds does not charge a storage fee for items held under an active consignment agreement.
